Local Learning Opportunities

The WEA (Workers’ Educational Association) runs courses of adults all over the country. These courses are often set up with the help of locally based volunteers who get together to discuss the kinds of courses that they think will go down well in their community. These groups are called Branches and anyone with an interest in lifelong learning is welcome to get involved and join their local branch. You can find a list of all the WEA Branches in the East Midlands by clicking here.

But what if there isn’t a WEA Branch near you? Well, if you have a community spirit and an enquiring mind and you like the idea of having your say about the development of a small programme of courses for adults being delivered in your area, perhaps a new WEA Branch could be the answer? If you would be interested in attending occasional meetings to help plan local learning opportunities and think that a few other local people might feel the same way, let us know.

Working in partnership with a designated course organiser from the WEA, with access to a large panel of tutors offering all sorts of subjects, you could be part of a small group of local residents who not only share our passion for adult learning but also help us to bring this passion to wherever it is that you live.

If you would like to have an informal chat about the possibilities and opportunities the WEA can offer, please call Lindsey Tasker on 07919 528 109 or send an email to ltasker@wea.org.uk

A taste of teaching pre-PTLLS course

The WEA East Midlands Region are planning to put together a pre-PTLLS course to give anyone thinking about a career teaching adults a taste of what the PTLLS course is all about.

At the moment, for many, the first step is to enrol on a PTLLS course – but this can be a very big first step to take. So, the idea behind a pre-PTLLS course would be to introduce people to some of the skills and knowledge needed to teach in the lifelong learning sector.

The course is still being developed, but some of the topics it is likely to cover include:

  • Adults as learners
  • Reflective practice
  • Learning styles

If you are interested in this course, either as a potential learner or as a partner organisation with a suitable room for hire and a willingness to help us promote the course to the local community – please call Lindsey for a chat on 07919 528 109.

Roman Nottinghamshire 43AD to 410AD

WEA tutor, Mark Patterson, is driven by a sense of wonder at the influence that the ghosts of ancient Romans continue to exert on the Nottinghamshire landscape:

“If you drive along the A46 Fosse Way, or follow the road from Littleborough to Bawtry, or the road from Derby to Long Eaton, you are following routes laid out by Roman army road surveyors.”

Mark will be delivering two separate courses on Roman Nottinghamshire, one in Lowdham and one in Radcliffe on Trent. Both are due to start next month, so you need to book now to secure your place. Using research undertaken for his recently published book Mark plans to take learners back to a time before Nottinghamshire existed, vividly describing Roman ways of life, and showing how the marks of Roman occupation are still in evidence all around us today.

The truth about Byron

There is still time to book a place on a new course, ‘Byron: the man behind the myth’ due to start in Arnold at the end of February.

“Byron was said to be shy, sulky, self-conscious and awkward, the opposite of how he is remembered. During this course we’ll ignore his poetry and concentrate on the man and his contradictory character at different points of his short but eventful life and consider how he has been variously represented over time.”

Start date: Wednesday 29 February 2012
Time: 10am-12noon
