Or, what social media can really do for you…
Ask most people what they think ‘Social Media’ is and the answer is likely to include the terms ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’, but according to Gary Copitch (Chief Executive of People’s Voice Media) this is not the case. What most of us think of as Social Media is actually Social Networking and the two things are very different.
Social Media is about allowing communities to produce the content they want in the way they want to, and through its Community Reporter Programme, People’s Voice Media aims to give a voice to communities to enable them to describe their own reality and challenge the perspectives given through more traditional media.
The aim is to develop more dialogue and community cohesion within society. So, more people getting involved in their communities. More people with shared visions for the places they live in. More people given the tools they need to get themselves heard where it matters.
People’s Voice Media aren’t the only organisation promoting this, Talk About Local are also trying to help people find a powerful online voice for their community and more importantly a voice that they both own and run.
All over the country groups of people are getting together online to get things changed. Whether it’s campaigning for a free-to-use cash point in a rural village, highlighting the issue of dog mess in a particular city area, or raising awareness about an upcoming local event – the tools to do this now exist online. They are completely free and they can empower all sorts of people in all sorts of places, just as long as they know how.
The WEA are keen to run courses that will give people the skills they need to get involved in what social media is really all about. To find out more, please contact Lindsey at firstname.lastname@example.org
